Hasso Stegemann joined the Kreigsmarine late in 1939. He was a Kadett at Marineschule Flensburg-Mürwik, as his father had been, and who had afterwards joined the staff. (Fregattenkapitän Fritz Stegemann died in 1920, one of the first casualties amongst the regular forces attempting to quell the Kapp Putsch by right-wing militias.)
Hasso Stegemann began his active service as a Schnellboot (E- or Fast Boat) officer. He was one of the survivors after his boat was attacked in the Atlantic by English aircraft, following which he was awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class (EK 1). He joined the U-boat arm in October 1941, and served as 2nd Watch Officer on the famous type IXB U-106 until August 1943. He then joined the 27th Flotilla until November, when he took part in Baubelehrung (construction familiarisation) on the type IXC U-1227 until Dec, after which he briefly served as 1st Watch Officer before U-boat commander training Dec 1943 - Feb 1944.
Oblt Stegemann took over command of the type VIIC U-367 in March 1944. He died with the rest of the crew one year later when she struck a mine off Hela while escorting a convoy, only two months before the end the war. (Niestlé, 1998).
