History | On 9 May, USS PC-558 (Lt(jg) Edward Charles Leber, USNR) was hit by a Gnat torpedo from the German submarine U-230 and sank quickly with the loss of 29 crew members about 28 miles northeast by north of Palermo, Sicily in position 38º41'N, 13º43'E.
