During 18/19 September 1942, HMS Howe (Capt. C.H.L. Woodhouse, CB, RN), HMS Argonaut (Capt. E.W.L. Longley-Cook, RN) and HMS Durban (Capt. P.G.L. Cazalet, DSC, RN), conducted exercises off Scapa Flow. These included night exercises. During these exercises HMS Howe was escorted by HMS Porcupine (Cdr. G.S. Stewart, RAN), HMS Oribi (Cdr. J.E.H. McBeath, DSO, DSC, RN) and HMS Blean (Lt. N.J. Parker, RN). (2)

Around 1500A/20, the battleship HMS Rodney (Capt. J.W. Rivett-Carnac, DSC, RN) and the aircraft carrier HMS Victorious (Capt. H.C. Bovell, CBE, RN) departed the Firth of Forth for Scapa Flow. About one hour later they were joined by the destroyers ORP Blyskawica (Lt.Cdr. L. Lichodziejewski, ORP), HMS Shikari (Lt.Cdr. G.H.D. Williams, RN) and the escort destroyers HMS Blean (Lt. N.J. Parker, RN), HMS Whaddon (Lt.Cdr. P.G. Merriman, RN) and HMS Zetland (Lt. J.V. Wilkinson, RN).
They arrived at Scapa Flow in the morning of September 21st. (3)
22 Sep 1942
Around 0615A/22, the battleship HMS Rodney (Capt. J.W. Rivett-Carnac, DSC, RN) departed Scapa Flow for Loch Ewe where she arrived around 1430A/22. She was escorted by the escort destroyers HMS Blean (Lt. N.J. Parker, RN), HMS Penylan (Lt.Cdr. H. Kirkwood, DSC, RN) and HMS Tanatside (Lt.Cdr. F.D. Brown, RN). (4)
