The battleship HMS Malaya (Capt. G.E.M. O’Donnell, DSO, RN) shifted from Port H.H.Z. (Loch Cairnbawn) to Scapa Flow.
She was escorted by the destroyer HMS Savage (Cdr. R.C. Gordon, DSO, RN) and the escort destroyer HMS Middleton (Lt. C.S. Battersby, RN).
Before entering Scapa Flow tactical exercises were carried out with HMS Danae (Capt. J.R.S. Haines, RN). (4)

In the morning, HMS Tantivy (Cdr. M.G. Rimington, DSO, RN), conducted attack exercises at/off Scapa Flow for the C.O.Q.C. (Commanding Officers Qualifying Course) with HMS Duke of York (Capt. B.B. Schofield, RN) that was escorted by HMS Savage (Cdr. R.C. Gordon, DSO, RN) and HMS Mahratta (Lt.Cdr. E.A.F. Drought, DSC, RN).
During the afternoon attack exercises were carried out with HMS London (Capt. R.V. Symonds-Tayler, DSC, RN). (5)

HMS Savage (Cdr. M.D.C. Meyrick, DSO, RN) picks up 56 survivors from the American merchant Penelope Barker that was torpedoed and sunk by German U-boat U-278 about 115 nautical miles from the North Cape in position 73°22'N, 22°30'E.
10 Mar 1945
HMS Scotsman (Lt. A.H.B. Anderson, DSC, RNR) conducted A/S exercises at Scapa Flow with HMS Carysfort (Lt.Cdr. L. St.G. Rich, DSO and Bar, RN) and HMS Savage (Lt.Cdr. C.W. Malins, DSO, DSC and Bar, RN). (8)

At 0341 hours, HMS Varne (Lt. I.G. Raikes, DSC, RN), was illuminated by friendly destroyers that were operating in the area. HMS Varne was out of position and did not identify herself before crash diving. She was lucky not to be depth charged.
The friendly destroyers encountered were HMS Scorpion (Cdr. C.W. McMullen, DSC, RN), HMS Savage (Lt.Cdr. C.W. Malins, DSO, DSC and Bar, RN), HMS Scourge (Lt.Cdr. C.G.H. Brown, DSC, RN) and HMS Zambesi (Lt.Cdr. J.M. Palmer, RN). They were on operation 'Invective', an anti-shipping raid. (10)
24 Apr 1945
