History | Ordered and laid down as battlecruisers of the Lexington class she was cancelled on 17 August 1923. Then reordered as carrier and commissioned as such. USS Lexington (Capt. Frederick Carl Sherman) was heavily damaged by bombs and torpedoes from Japanese aircraft during the Battle of the Coral Sea. Finally sunk by torpedo from the US destroyer USS Phelps in position 15º12'S, 155º27'E. |
