Notable events involving Chicago (i) include:

31 May 1942
The USS Chicago (i) has a particular connection to the city of Sydney, Australia. Chicago was moored in Sydney Harbour on the night of 31 May 1942 and was attacked by a Japanese midget submarine (one of three)launched the previous day. The Chicago fired on the midget submarine and then survived a torpedo attack from the submarine that sank and destroyed another allied ship killing 19 people. The Chicago immediately left Sydney Harbour and made for open sea. This is a very famous wartime incident in Australian and Sydney's history. Refer official Australian archive fact sheet at: (2)

9 Aug 1942
USS Chicago was part of Allied forces operating near Guadalcanal and took part in Battle of Savo. Japanese forces (under command of Admiral Mikawa) totally surprised the Allies. Chicago was hit by "Long Lance" torpedo and lost her bow. (2)
