During the Battle of Tassafaronga on 30 November 1942, USS Northampton (Captain Willard Augustus Kitts) was hit by two "Long Lance" torpedoes from the Japanese destroyer Oyashio and sank the following day 50 died and 35 were wounded as a result and 775 survivors were rescued by the USS Drayton/Fletcher which included the Commanding officer;off Lunga Point in position 09º12'S, 159º50'E.
