Notable events involving Patterson include:

15 Jan 1943
The light cruiser HMAS Hobart (Capt. H.L. Howden, RAN) and the destroyers USS Patterson (T/Cdr. W.C. Schultz, USN) and HMAS Vendetta (Lt.Cdr. C.J. Stephenson, RAN) conducted gunnery exercises off Moreton Bay. On completion of the exercises HMAS Vendetta returned to Moreton Bay early on the 16th. The other two ships remained at sea. (2)

25 Aug 1943
The Japanese submarine I-25 is possibly sunk with depth charges some 110 nautical miles north-west of Espiritu Santo in position 13°10'S, 165°27'E by the US destroyer USS Ellet.

29 Sep 1943
Just before midnight on September 29, 1943, the USS Patterson collided with the USS McCalla (DD-488). Both ships' bows were sheared off at about the #1 gun turret. Three crewmen on the Patterson were killed and 10 were injured in the collision. The Captain of the McCalla was Lt.Cdr Halford A. Knoertzer who was "1st Lieutenant" on the Patterson when she was commissioned on September 22, 1937. (3)

USS Iowa (Capt. J.L. McCrea, USN) departed Majoro Atoll for a two day exercise together with her sister ship USS New Jersey (Capt. C.F. Holden, USN), light carrier USS Belleau Wood (Capt. J. Perry, USN) and destroyers USS Izard (Cdr. M.T. Dayton, USN), USS Charrette (Cdr. E.S. Karpe, USN), USS Bell (Lt.Cdr. J.S.C. Gabbert, USN), USS Burns (Cdr. D.T. Eller, USN), USS Conner (Cdr. W.E. Kaitner, USN), USS Patterson (Lt.Cdr. A.F. White, USN) and USS Dorsey (Lt.Cdr. A.E. Teall, USN).
