Son of Henry and Eleanor Mary Cox, of Lowestoft, Suffolk. Denis Cox survived the sinking of Hartlebury and later served aboard Harpagus, but died in an accident after the British ammunition transport Fort La Montee caught fire and blew up in the harbor of Algiers.
