Tage Vagn Pedersen remembered the sinking of Egholm in an article in a Danish newspaper in 1946 in these words: I was in the washroom when the torpedo struck I couldn`t get the door open, and I lost - maybe only for an instant - consciousness. When I came to again the lights had gone out, but through a porthole I could see the lower deck was under water. I was ready to say goodbye to life. That the door couldn`t open showed that the ship`s whole construction was damaged. Maybe it was the water pressure outside the door that helped me, because at last I managed to tear the door open. The room filled up with water, but I got out and came free of the sinking ship. Only one warship escorted our convoy and couldn`t come to help us, but it summoned another ship and so I got 14 days "rescue leave".
