William Charles Jones was rescued by HMCS Timmins after the sinking of Empire Sailor. He was one of three men from the ship who reboarded the vessel equipped with gas masks to search for three missing crewmen and to see if the ship could be salvaged. Doing so he inhaled phosgene gas and became ill after landing at Halifax but recovered.
