John Cassidy is thought to have joined the Chr. J. Kampmann in Trinidad only a day or so before her tragic end. He had been six months in prison for hitting the master and the bosun aboard his previous ship because he didn't like the bosun hitting a deck boy. After serving his time he was put on the first Allied ship leaving Trinidad.
